OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated health and wellness experience within ChatGPT, designed to bring personal health information and AI-driven assistance together in a separate, protected space. The company has positioned the feature to help users better understand health information, prepare for medical appointments, and navigate everyday health-related decisions without replacing professional medical care.
ChatGPT Health has been built as a standalone experience within the platform, where health conversations, connected apps, and uploaded files have remained isolated from regular chats. OpenAI has stated that health conversations have not been used to train its foundation models and have been protected through additional layers of encryption and data isolation beyond standard ChatGPT security measures.
The company has enabled users to securely connect medical records and wellness applications to provide context-aware responses. Supported integrations have included medical records through U.S.-based providers, Apple Health on iOS, and wellness apps such as Function and MyFitnessPal. OpenAI has noted that app connections have required explicit user permission and can be removed at any time through settings.
ChatGPT Health has been designed to assist with understanding lab results, tracking health trends over time, preparing questions for doctors, and interpreting data from wearables and wellness apps. OpenAI has clarified that the experience has not been intended for diagnosis or treatment and has been designed to support, rather than replace, clinicians.
Access to ChatGPT Health has initially been offered through a waitlist, with availability starting for a limited group of users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. OpenAI has said that access has been expanded gradually as the product continues to be refined, with plans to make it available more broadly on web and iOS in the coming weeks.
The development of ChatGPT Health has taken place in collaboration with physicians across multiple countries and specialties. OpenAI has stated that this work has informed how the system communicates health information, escalates concerns, and prioritises safety in sensitive situations.
At launch, some medical record integrations and app connections have remained limited to the U.S., with Apple Health integration requiring iOS.
