PayPal, Inc. has announced a partnership with OpenAI to adopt the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), expanding payments and commerce experiences within ChatGPT. The collaboration allows millions of ChatGPT users to check out instantly using PayPal, while PayPal supports payment processing for merchants through OpenAI Instant Checkout.
The partnership connects PayPal’s global merchant network—comprising tens of millions of small businesses and large brands—to ChatGPT, allowing users to discover, explore, and purchase products directly within conversations. This move positions ChatGPT as a new platform for conversational commerce, bridging consumers and merchants through an AI-powered interface.
PayPal’s wallet will power these transactions, offering multiple payment options such as bank, balance, and card, alongside its established buyer and seller protections, shipment tracking, and dispute resolution services. This integration aims to combine the security and convenience of PayPal’s infrastructure with the accessibility of ChatGPT.
Beginning in 2026, the adoption of ACP will allow product catalogues from small businesses and leading retail brands across apparel, fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics to be made available within ChatGPT. PayPal will manage merchant routing, payment validation, and backend orchestration via its ACP server—creating a streamlined link between merchants and ChatGPT without requiring separate integrations.
The collaboration also extends beyond payments. PayPal is expanding its AI strategy with OpenAI by adopting ChatGPT Enterprise for over 24,000 employees, integrating Codex for engineering workflows, and deploying OpenAI APIs to enhance product development and customer experience.
