Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed an application to officially register the trademark “Captain Cool”, a moniker he earned because of his ability to keep his cool under pressure during cricket matches. The wait finally got over after almost two years, as the application, filed in June 2023, was accepted in June 2025.
As per media reports, Dhoni filed the application in June 2023 which was “accepted and advertised” by the Trademarks Registry, Kolkata Office, in June this year. The trademark was filed under categories related to sports training, coaching, and the provision of sports training facilities and services. It was published in the journal on June 16, 2025, to invite objections. The trademark will be granted if no objection or opposition is raised by any third party within 120 days of its acceptance (June 16, 2025).
The trademark application has been made under Class 41, a category dealing with education, training, entertainment, sporting and cultural activities. Dhoni has made the application to secure the rights over “Captain Cool” in fields related to sports training and coaching.
Once the “Captain Cool” trademark is granted, none other than Dhoni can commercially use the name in fields related to sports and entertainment.
