The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has met social media platforms and civil society groups amid concerns over proposed amendments to the IT rules, which aim to bring independent news creators under regulatory oversight and mandate compliance with advisories.
The meeting has taken place following public outcry over the draft changes, which, as per media reports, have raised concerns among industry stakeholders and advocacy groups regarding increased scrutiny and compliance requirements.
IT Secretary S Krishnan has said that the ministry is open to suggestions and feedback from stakeholders. He has also indicated that the government may extend the April 14 deadline for submitting responses, following requests from the industry for additional time.
Krishnan has maintained that the proposed amendments do not expand regulatory powers and are largely clarificatory in nature. He has added that the government is working within the framework of existing regulations and the Constitution.
