The IPL frenzy in India is unmissable. The pomp, glamour, play and fever of the Indian Premier League attracts people from around the world, and is a great time for brands to make their presence felt. This year will see the 15th season of this action-packed sport, being witnessed by crores of Indians with bated breath.
The season starting March 26th, will see Kolkata Knight Riders compete with Chennai Super Kings. Ten teams will compete against each other in 70 matches spanning over a period of two months. Two new teams will play their first match this year. Let’s take a look at the owners of each of these teams, along with each team’s brand value.
1. Mumbai Indians
This five-season winning team is owned by conglomerate Reliance Industries through its subsidiary IndiaWin Sports. Rohit Sharma is the team’s captain. Mahela Jayawardene and Shane Bond are the team’s coaches. The team with the highest brand value, Mumbai Indians have emerged as the hand’s down leader with a brand value of INR 761 crores.
2. Chennai Super Kings
Defending champions this year, Chennai Super Kings is owned by Cement manufacturing entity- India Cements. The brand value in in 2021 was estimated to be more than $900 million and this team became a unicorn sports enterprise in 2022.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders
Two times IPL Champions, KKR as it is fondly called, is owned by Red Chillies Entertainment, owned by Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan and has a 55% stake in the team. It is co-owned by the Mehta group, with a 45% stake in the team. Mehta Group is owned by Jay Mehta, who is actor Juhi Chawla’s husband. As of 2021, the team’s brand value is around is INR 523 crore.
4. Sunrisers Hyderabad
The orange army is owned by Indian media magnate Kalanithi Maran, the Chairman and founder of Sun Group. The team’s brand value was estimated to be around $57.4 million in 2020. The team’s captain is David Warner and Trevor Bayliss is its coach.
5. Delhi Capitals
Formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, the team is owned by GMR Group and JSW Group. The team is captained by Rishabh Pant and in 2019, the its brand value was an estimated INR 375 crore.
6. Royal Challengers Bangalore
Captained by Virat Kohli, the team is owned by United Spirits and is valued at INR 536 crore.
7. Punjab Kings
Also known as Kings XI Punjab till 2019, is co-owned by four stakeholders- Mohit Burman of Dabur group (46%), Ness Wadia of Wadia Group (23%), actress Preity Zinta (23%) and Saptarshi Dey of Dey Group (minor stake). In 2019, the brand value of the team was INR 358 crore but in 2020, the value slumped by 11%.
8. Rajasthan Royals
The League’s first champion, Rajasthan Royals is co-owned by Manoj Badale of Emerging Media with a 65% stake, Lachlan Murdoch with a stake of 13% and Redbird Capital Partners with a 15% stake. The team’s current brand value stands at INR 249 crores, but with new talent joining the team, the value is expected to soar.
9. Gujarat Titans
Hardik Pandya will lead the team which will make its debut this year. Owned by CVC Capital Partners, a British private equity and investment advisory firm.
10. Lucknow Supergiant’s
This Lucknow-based IPL team is owned by RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, which won the operational rights of this franchise at a bid of a whopping INR 7090 crore. KL Rahul will be the captain of the team.
