Balaji Telefilms, in partnership with JioHotstar, is reviving the legendary “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” as a limited-episode series. The iconic show, which marked its 25th anniversary last month, is set to return with actor-politician Smriti Irani reprising her role as Tulsi Virani, a character that earned her nationwide recognition.
But, Ekta Kapoor, the creative force behind Balaji Telefilms, almost decided against reviving the show. Reflecting on the process, she shared that her initial reaction to the reboot idea was a clear no.
“The show gave voice to women in Indian homes. Between 2000 and 2005, for the first time, women began participating in family discussion, a shift deeply influenced by Indian television, especially ‘Kyunki…”, she wrote in an Instagram post titled: “Why Kyunki, Why Now?”

Fans expressed nostalgia and excitement over Kyunki‘s return, recalling its lasting impact on audiences. They praised the show for its memorable characters, powerful storylines on social issues like domestic abuse, and emotional moments like Mihir’s death. Many see the return of the original cast as a meaningful gift for loyal viewers who still remember the show fondly.
“Once dependent on 9 cities, audiences now consume content in fragments, scattered across platforms,” she added.
Ekta Kapoor reflected on how television once tackled meaningful social issues and expressed a desire to move away from today’s storytelling styles. She recalled asking herself whether it was possible to bring back the time when families gathered around the dinner table to talk – a question that led to a clear answer and a smile.
To mark 25 years of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, the show is returning with a limited series aimed at sparking thought, inspiring viewers, and entertaining a new generation.
The original series aired from July 3, 2000, to November 6, 2008, and had an eight-year successful run on Indian television. Season 2 will not only commemorate its legacy but also mark Smriti Irani’s much-anticipated return to acting, reuniting her with Amar Upadhyay on screen after many years.
