What’s in a name? you must have read his saying by Shakespeare many times but believe it or not there is a story behind every name and we have tried to explore some of the tales behind the names of foods that have been named after real people. As naming is also a very important part in marketing and these stories can help you a lot if you are thinking about naming your new business.

1. Nachos

Named after the chef Ignacio Anaya, having the nickname as ‘Nacho’. Nachos were invented in 1943 in a Mexican village. One day the wives of U.S. soldiers came to this restaurant which was already closed and Ignacio Anaya made a mixture fried tortilla chips, shredded cheese, and jalapenos in a hurry. This was liked by everyone who ate it was named after this chef.

2. Sandwich

Named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. In early days pieces of meats were named as the sandwich. This has a very interesting story behind it as it is believed that the Earl ordered that meat should be tucked between two pieces of bread so that he could continue his gambling without getting his cards greasy. Soon, any meat tucked between two slices of bread was known as a sandwich.

3. Margherita pizza

Named after an Italian queen. There are still debates on the origin of this name but most of the people believe that it was named after the Queen Margherita of Savoy. Once the queen decided to visit Naples, Italy and the chef made 3 pizzas for her to eat and she liked the one which was colorful and had tomato, mozzarella cheese and basil leaves present on the top. After that this pizza was named as Margherita pizza.

4. Maggi

Yes, our all-time favorite 2-minute noodles are also named after a real person Julius Michael Johannes Maggi. This guy is the inventor of Maggi sauce and soups, in early days Julius used to sell these packaged products but later Nestle took over Maggi by acquiring and made decided to make instant noodles which are now known as Maggi popularly.

5. Eggs Benedict

Named after Lemuel Benedict. This is actually a food dish which was invented by a person who was wandering in the streets due to the hangover and in order to cure this, he decided to order toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon. The waiter was so impressed by this choice of items that he decided to make this available as a breakfast dish and soon this became famous and the people from the restaurant decided to name this after the guy with the hangover.
