Google Cloud has reported intermittent network disruptions affecting some customers in India after a fire at a third-party data centre triggered an emergency shutdown of networking equipment.
The fire has led to an emergency power shutdown at the facility, isolating a local point of presence in Delhi and reducing network capacity across the metropolitan area, as per media reports. Google Cloud has not disclosed when the fire occurred or whether it resulted in any property damage or injuries.
The incident has affected network traffic from Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and nearby regions, causing periods of elevated latency, according to the company’s status page.
Google Cloud has stated that there has been no workaround available while restoration efforts have continued. The company has added that it has been exploring additional traffic mitigation measures to limit the impact.
The cloud computing unit of Alphabet has been one of the world’s largest cloud providers and competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Its services have been widely used for processing large volumes of data and running artificial intelligence tools.
Such disruptions have had the potential to affect businesses and users by slowing applications, websites and internal company systems.
