Box Office Estimated To Earn More Than ₹12,515 Crores In 2022

Since the lockdown which was imposed the pandemic got lifted, multiplexes have been up and running. They started with all the major social distancing norms from leaving every other seat empty to wearing face masks at all times.

However, by the second quarter of 2022, these regulations were relaxed and made it easier for people to enjoy their favorite movies just like before. This has also helped the production houses to finally release their upcoming movies on the big screen than on online streaming platforms.

As per a report by media consulting firm Ormax and media investment firm GroupM, Box office revenue is expected to touch a record 12,515 crores in 2022, surpassing the previous high of 10, 948 crores which were in 2019.

The report further mentions that the revenue generated from ticket sales between January 2022 and April 2o22 was also at an all-time high of 4,002 crore in the said period.

The report was titled ‘India is back…at the theatres’. As per its findings, the average monthly box office collection stood at Rs 1,000 crore.

It further stated that these milestones have been achieved despite the impact of the third wave and 18 percent of cinemas still being closed since 2019.

The sales were not only contributed by the Hindi film industry but had a huge influence from the regional movies, especially Tamil and Telugu.

Telugu films contributed 27% to overall revenues compared to 12% in 2019 while Hindi cinema’s share fell from 43% in 2018 and 39% in 2019 to 38% in 2022.

As per the report, K.G.F: Chapter 2 was the best performing movie of the quarter with Rs 1,008 crore in collections so far. This was followed by “RRR” and “The Kashmir Files” with gross collections of Rs 875 crore and Rs 293 crore, respectively.

Tamil film Beast, 169 crores, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, 153 crores, were also among the top grosser of the year.
