In a major leadership development, Campbell Wilson has resigned as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air India, marking an abrupt exit at a critical phase in the airline’s ongoing transformation. Wilson’s departure comes less than five years into his tenure, which began in 2022 following the airline’s return to the Tata Group.
Brought in to lead one of the most ambitious aviation turnarounds globally, Wilson had been tasked with modernising operations, integrating Air India’s various entities, and restoring the airline’s global competitiveness.
Wilson’s exit follows a period of sustained financial stress and heightened regulatory scrutiny for the airline. Mounting losses, operational disruptions, and compliance-related concerns had increasingly put the spotlight on the airline’s leadership. As per media, the timing of his resignation suggests a culmination of these pressures, even as the broader restructuring agenda continues.
As per reports, Wilson is expected to serve a notice period to ensure a smooth transition while the airline initiates the search for a successor. The leadership change introduces fresh uncertainty into Air India’s turnaround roadmap, which has so far relied heavily on centralised leadership direction.
