Vijaypat Singhania, former chairman of Raymond Group, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai on March 28, 2026, marking the end of an era for India’s textile industry. A Padma Bhushan awardee and pioneering aviator, Singhania was instrumental in transforming Raymond into one of the country’s most trusted menswear brands, elevating it into a global name during his tenure.
Gautam Singhania, the son of Vijaypat Singhania and Managing Director of Raymond Group, announced the news of his father’s passing via X.
Singhania led the company as chairman for two decades from 1980 to 2000, after which he handed over the reins to his son Gautam Singhania, along with transferring his 37% stake in the business, as per media reports. Beyond his corporate legacy, he was widely respected for his achievements in aviation, including setting a world record for the highest altitude reached in a hot air balloon. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2006, along with several other recognitions for his contributions.
Under his leadership, Raymond popularised the iconic ‘Complete Man’ campaign, which redefined men’s fashion and brand storytelling in India by focusing on values, sensitivity, and modern masculinity. In aviation, Singhania also earned a place in the Guinness World Records for achieving the highest altitude in a hot air balloon, further cementing his reputation as a trailblazer beyond the business world.
He is survived by his wife Ashadevi Singhania and children Madhupati Singhania, Shephali Ruia, and Gautam Singhania. Media reports that his last rites were performed at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Kalbadevi, Mumbai on March 29, 2026, in the presence of family and close friends, who gathered to pay their final respects.
