D2M 101: What Is It And How Can It Transform Your Mobile Experience?

If you haven’t heard yet, D2M is the latest technology hitting your mobile experience. Introduced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and India’s public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati, direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting entails viewing richer forms of content including videos without the need for an active internet connection.

How will Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) Broadcasting Work?

While its feasibility is still being tested, direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting seems promising. Using broadband and broadcasting, it can bring forward a terrestrial digital TV experience on your mobile phones without using the internet. It will be very similar to tuning into radio frequencies to listen to different channels.

The motive behind introducing such an advanced form of technology is to help bridge the gap between authentic and fake news. Further, it can be utilised to beam citizen-centric information and immediate alerts to the audience in no time. It can prove to be a helpful solution, especially during disaster management situations. Moreover, you can enjoy different types of news on a regular basis and also tune into sports highlights, shows and more without the prospect of buffering while watching videos.

The Government’s Role in Facilitating D2M

Currently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is understanding the feasibility of this broadcasting spectrum with the help of an internal committee. As per DoT Secretary K Rajaraman, Band 526-582 MHz (the D2M technology) will work with mobile as well as broadcast services, in addition to serving the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for TV transmitters all around India.
