The pharma industry in India is very large in terms of volume. It is expected that India will become 3rd largest pharma industry in the world by 2020 and these numbers are promising for the companies in this sector. The pharma industry in India is driven by the exports to foreign markets. Currently, India exports medicines, vaccines and biopharmaceutical products to about 200 countries.

There are very few purely Indian pharma companies in our country as most companies are controlled and operated by foreign companies having
subsidiaries in India as cheap labour is available here. This is due to the reason that pharmaceutical industry is a knowledge-driven industry and is dependent on research and development which is a very time consuming and expensive process.
