IIM Ahmedabad is doing a case study on Bollywood blockbuster movie Baahubali to reveal how the combination of art, business and technology delivered one of the most successful movies in Indian film industry. This case study is an important part of an elective course on movie business that is included in the syllabus of 2nd-year students of the IIM Ahmadabad’s flagship programme in management. Directed by SS Rajamouli both movies of Baahubali series earned over Rs 1,000 crore at box office.
This is the third case study related to the film industry in this course, previous ones were on the success of films “Roja” and Rajinikanth’s “Muthu” in overseas markets.
“Baahubali is a path-breaking Indian movie that combines art, business, and technology in a brilliant way. Most of the time, films are creative and artistic but are not able to do good business. Sometimes the technology is not used effectively enough,” IIMA alumnus and visiting faculty Bharathan Kandaswamy said.
This case study will focus to know about the reasons why Baahubali- The Beginning and its sequel achieved fame in Indian audience. The case study on Baahubali will be completed in next 4 months.
“In the case of Baahubali movies, three elements of art, technology and business have come together and that is the reason why the movie and its sequel have been successful,” Kandaswamy added.
Last year, a new chapter was added in this course which studied how the entry of companies like Amazon, Hotstar and Netflix were causing disruption Indian film industry.
Other colleges in India should also adopt such ideas to help students to know about industries in a better way. Studying current topics can help industries also as these students are the ones who will work in the companies in coming years.
