Indian philanthropists have been a part of generations in various business families. They developed a work culture that will also serve for the well-being of society. Moreover, to help, Companies Act 2013 made it mandatory for companies to have at least 2% of their profits dedicated to various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

Hence, it isn’t surprising to see Shiv Nadar top the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy list.

What is this list?

This list of 2019 talks about the leaders and corporate heads who have contributed to the Indian society to the best of their ability. Shiv Nadar tops the list while Mukesh Ambani comes third. Infact, Azim Premji who announced his USD 21 billion contributions to charity comes second on the list, for obvious reasons.

Shiv Nadar led the way with an Rs 826 crore contribution while Azim Premji contributed Rs 453 crores. Mukesh Ambani who stood third gave Rs 402 crores to help, hence stood third in the list.

However, the list focuses on the individual contribution which is why The Tatas were clearly excluded from the list.

The number of Indians donating to social causes (excluding a major share of religious causes) has gone up to 72, which is almost double what was last year. This is also acclaimed to the fact that the wealthy families in India have increased their contribution to such CSR causes by 0.4% this year.

With the number of entrepreneurs on the constant uprise, it has shown how new-age entrepreneurs like the Bansals of Flipkart also plan to donate and work for society.

Investments in education and healthcare are the most popular ones whereas overall contribution to philanthropic activities has gone up to Rs 4391 crore in India this year.
