The Russian invasion of Ukraine has managed to create ripples across many sectors. And the fashion industry to is not far behind. At the Paris Fashion Week, Dior’s show on Tuesday had designer Maria Grazia Chiuri showcasing her collection that was designed keeping in mind “beauty and protection”, especially at this time in history.
Though the collection was put before the war, which began with Russia carrying out bombing in Ukraine last week, the designer feels, that we have been in a state of war since long. “Covid was another form of war. We have all experienced some very difficult months.
There is a lot of reflection, in these difficult times, about how to combine beauty, aesthetics and protection.” According to her, the fashion exhibited at the Paris Fashion Week, was created with an aim to finding technical options, which could be extra purposeful for girls’ bodies.

Dior’s show had models showcasing clothes with protective gear like airbag corsets and shoulder pads. Tops resembling bulletproof vests were also exhibited. All of this reminded the audience of the ongoing war from Eastern Europe.
A piece of fashion that caught the eye of many, was a high-tech remake of the iconic Dior’s Bar Jacket, that was hypersexualised to give it a futuristic look. The jacket boasted of features like an internal heating system and padded hips, and was made in collaboration with an Italian bike equipment agency D-Lab.
Chiuri, who is a hardcore feminist feels that the current eastern European crisis is due to the failings of a male-dominated society. According to her, the problem is more cultural and patriarchal. She feels, that more women should be made part of and given decision-making positions. This could have the world see fewer wars,” she said.
