The youth today has become more inclined towards living a self-sufficient life. While working a regular job is important, people want to be self-dependent and become their own bosses. Even while working their regular jobs, many keep looking for opportunities to start their own business.
Something similar happened with Jyoti Ganapathi and her husband Satya Koniki. After working with the corporate sector for a couple of years, the duo has now started their own food truck, Dosa Inc, which is slightly different than the others.
Dosa Inc serves delicious home-cooked food items like Rava dosa, tomato onion uttapam, medhu vada, filter coffee, and specials like bandakai vepudu, malabar parotha and tengozal ladoo barfi. And the USP that Dosa Inc has is that in spite of waiting for their customers to come, they take the truck to them.
How It All Began?
Jyoti had started working in her father’s logistic and supply company after getting an extensive education and a Master’s degree in Human Resources from Knox College in the United States. Satya had a Masters’ in telecommunications and was having a successful career with startups in Bangalore.
However, both of them knew that their ultimate dream was to start their food business. That was their true passion and it did not take them long to act on it. In 2012, they took their love for south Indian cuisine to the next level and started Dosa Inc.
But why a food truck? Well, the duo did think of starting a restaurant first but soon realized that the cost of setting up a restaurant would be higher than starting a food truck. Plus the trend was new in the country back then but was a pretty common deal in the west. They decided to make the most of this untapped market.
Setting up the Food Truck & More
Jyoti & Satya invested Rs 10,00,000 to purchase the truck and the necessary kitchen equipment.
Initially, they had purchased a tempo traveler but soon they realized that it was way too heavy and not easy to move heavy equipment in it. So, they decided to switch to a CNG-run TATA Ace which is also eco-friendly.
They required a list of permits & licenses to start their food truck business and to understand the motor vehicular norms of the state they work operating in.
After all the necessary steps were taken Dosa Inc was ready to start the business. The food truck now drives to different gated societies, residential buildings, and office complexes, to gather clientele and it even offers home delivery in the area where the truck is parked.
In order to spread the word, the couple chose direct marketing as their mode of advertisement and distributed pamphlets with the menu and dates and times of availability in specific neighborhoods.
