Established in 1861 with a focus on firearms production and then expanding into motorcycles in 1903 with an ambition to become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer by the 1950s, the iconic Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) Motorcycles from Britain has officially debuted in India for the first time, under the stewardship of Classic Legends, a Mahindra & Mahindra subsidiary.
The first product from BSA Motorcycles under Classic Legends is the legendary BSA Gold Star which was unveiled for Indian motorcycle enthusiasts on August 15, 2024.
Throughout its history, BSA has played a significant role in shaping the motorcycle industry, firstly by acquiring Triumph Engineering in 1951 and then merging it with Norton-Villiers, followed by setting several speed records for itself in the early 1970s and being deeply intertwined with various subculture groups like the Ton-Up Boys, Promenade Percys, and Clubman Racers.
That being said, even though the original BSA had ceased operations in England in 1973, BSA motorcycles held a special place in India’s motorcycling heritage for they were often gifted to affluent Indian acquaintances, particularly within the Parsi community. In fact, motorcycle enthusiasts in India have restored, auctioned, and preserved BSA motorcycles over the course of time, with many spotlighting their collectibles in vintage collector clubs across the country.
With a history so rich, the BSA Gold Star is now being launched in India under the stewardship of Classic Legends, a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra which is focussed on preserving motorcycle heritage and has been known for offering the widest portfolio of retro-modern motorcycles as well as seamlessly blending old-school styling with contemporary features.
As part of the same, BSA plans to build a nationwide network of dealerships and service centres, ensuring exceptional support for Indian customers and being dedicated towards continuous innovation in motorcycle design and technology, with plans to expand its range in India while preserving its British character.
The BSA Gold Star will be available at select dealerships across India starting August 15, 2024, with prices beginning at Rs 2.99 Lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.
Speaking on the launch of BSA Goldstar in India, Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group said, “Bringing BSA to India is about sharing a piece of world motorcycling history with India. That indomitable spirit of BSA, a brand built in the fires of battle, is imbued in the new Gold Star that I hope all of you have a chance to experience.”
To this, Anupam Thareja, Cofounder, Classic Legends, added, “The BSA Gold Star embodies the essence of motorcycling excellence. Every detail, from the tank’s iconic shape to the engine’s big single character, has been meticulously crafted to capture the spirit of BSA’s golden age while delivering the performance, reliability, and innovation that define a global brand. We’ve poured our hearts into ensuring it lives up to the storied legacy that has set the gold standard for generations worldwide.”
