If you have been to South India, you would haven’t been surprised by this move. Serving food on banana leaves is very common there. And if you are not aware of its benefits, banana leaves contain large amounts of polyphenols that are natural antioxidants and food served on the banana leaves absorbs the polyphenols which are said to prevent many lifestyle diseases. They are also said to have antibacterial properties that can possibly kill the germs in food.
But this is not the philosophy behind why Anand Mahindra decided to replace plates with banana leaves. He explained the reason behind the move in a tweet.
Anand Mahindra tweeted, “A retired journalist, Padma Ramnath mailed me out of the blue & suggested that if our canteens used banana leaves as plates, it would help struggling banana farmers who were having trouble selling their produce. Our proactive factory teams acted instantly on the idea…Thank you!”
