5 Popular Social Media Sites That Failed Badly

Living in the 21st century, social media has a huge impact on our lives. It has made communication easy throughout the entire world and has been a major turn in the world of marketing.

There are so many brands that have joined in and have tried their best possible way to stand out in the audience and capture them with meaningful content. But due to huge mistakes, they had to face consequences that ultimately resulted in their permanent downfall. The best part about a social media site is that they leave a mark on the web even if they are not active anymore over the internet. Here is a list of 5 social media sites that bid us goodbye in 2019:

1. DailyBooth

It was a photo blogging site to engage people in taking a daily picture with a caption. It was similar to modern Instagram but was shut down by the end of 2012. At the beginning of its launch in the year 2009, it gained high popularity and many celebrities and influencers joined it. It had reached 3 million uploads within six months. Later it was taken over by Airbnb in April 2012 to support the travel mission which lead to its disappearance.

2. Friendfeed

It was a portal launched in 2007 where people connected with each other. It was formed by the former employees of Google. FriendFeed used other social websites to create its own network focusing on its usefulness and updated its platform. It was later purchased by Facebook for $15 million cash and $32.5 million stock and was shutdown in April 2015. The main reason behind its closure was the lack of enthusiasm among people to use it.

3. iTunes Ping

It is a social media networking site owned by Apple. It had a massive effect on music and was launched in the year 2010 with one million users. Its 10th edition allowed people to follow the artists and get updates from their friends and artists for music. However, it was shut down in 2012 as it was not properly integrated with Facebook when it was launched.

4. Google Wave and Google Buzz

Launched in the year 2010 Google Buzz was a replacement to Google Wave which was launched one year prior to the later. It was developed by Google as a global social media site to give competition to Facebook. These platforms allowed users to share posts with their friends according to their privacy. Ultimately it created a great mess and a giant privacy nightmare and was dissolved and added to Google project graveyard.

5. Yik Yak

It was launched in the year 2014 and was an anonymous messaging mobile app that gained popularity amongst the people of the young generation. One of the main reasons behind its failure was anonymity. It allowed the users to post anything they wanted to about anyone around their vicinity. This resulted in bomb threats and acts of violence.

Already the social media sites have so many internet bullies and lead to many crimes. Yik Yak was like a contribution to it. So by the end of 2014, people declined using it and it was shut down in early 2017.

To not add to this list, make sure you do your own research – of both market and competitors!
