Chess.com recently held a charity event Checkmate COVID, to raise COVID relief funds for those affected in our country. For the same, various famous personalities like Nikhil Kamath, Viswanathan Anand, Aamir Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala, Yuzvendra Chahal and Riteish Deshmukh featured in the event to help raise those funds.

Massive THANK YOU to everyone for making this event a grand success! 🙌🏻

We are glad to share that we managed to raise more than 10 Lakhs from this event! @AkshayaPatra

Now, although all celebrities lost to Viswanathan Anand, chess grandmaster and former world chess champion, Nikhil Kamath, co-founder and CIO of Zerodha shocked everyone with his win against the famous world champion. He was also awarded an accuracy of 99%!

The Chess players community took this defeat with a pinch of salt and popular International Chess YouTuber, Agadmator conducted a post-match analysis which showed that Nikhil had violated the ‘Fair-Play’ policy. In a video that he released on his channel later, one can see how.

Post this, Nikhil’s chess.com game account was also closed down. He later Tweeted an apology and said that he took help from some people and computers to analyse the game.

It is ridiculous that so many are thinking that I really beat Vishy sir in a chess game, that is almost like me waking up and winning a 100mt race with Usain Bolt. 😬 pic.twitter.com/UoazhNiAZV

This news soon went viral with everyone joining in on the discussion. With famous personalities commenting on the situation, the matter escalated very quickly and caught on with everyone soon enough.

I must admit, chesscom does have an amazing fairplay detection system pic.twitter.com/4bFIFaHyf5

Disheartened to come to know that even Sajid Nadiadwala cheated yesterday. This is pure disrespect to chess.

— Samay Raina (@ReheSamay) June 14, 2021

Woke up to this. Complete disrespect to chess. Nothing justifies cheating. Going back to sleep https://t.co/d8RCCst3TG

Anand basically crushed Stockfish 🦾

— agadmator (@agadmator) June 14, 2021

how could you cheat against Vishy? AND during an online fundraising event… 😡

— Eric Hansen (@hansenchess) June 13, 2021

Oh 'fish', he has a company that deals with 'stock' 😄 https://t.co/hIlHIbC8Ex

SHAMEFUL.
The win-at-all-costs mentality will take us all down one day. pic.twitter.com/2h02vnPfcl

Memes and jokes also went rife at the situation with everyone commenting and expressing their views.

Viswanathan Anand and his wife finally made a statement. The chess legend tweeted in response to Nikhil’s tweet and concluded by saying, “I just played the position on the board and expected the same from everyone.”

Yesterday was a celebrity simul for people to raise money It was a fun experience upholding the ethics of the game.I just played the position onthe board and expected the same from everyone . pic.twitter.com/ISJcguA8jQ

— Viswanathan Anand (@vishy64theking) June 14, 2021

(2/2)

… He requested Mr. Kamath not to involve Anand’s name in his Tweets or in his course of action. That he went ahead and did it and allege something is disrespectful."
