In the last 33 years, Procter & Gamble has retained its spot as the world’s largest advertiser, losing to the second position only once before 2020. This year, it has been dethroned by Amazon that raised $11 billion in 2019 owing to its marketing and advertising revenue. This has helped Amazon indulge in rapid sales, more than marketing their products and services.
Procter & Gamble (P&G’)’s Record In The Last Three Years
P&G holds other brands like Tide, Gilette and Febreeze. In the last 33 years, it was dethroned just once in 2017 by Samsung Electronics. In 2019, P&G generated $67.68 billion in revenue alone.
How Does Amazon Do It?
Amazon has soared its ad expenses to $11 billion this year, replacing Procter & Gamble in the #1 spot. This has been a fair increase of 34% for the online e-commerce giant, that has also developed its branches in the music and OTT industry. Through sponsored searches, third party marketing strategies, and social, television and other forms of marketing, they get consumers on to their platforms that help them with the sales of products and services.
Amazon was also seen regularly advertising the US Super Bowl. Several ad agencies also contribute to their creative campaigns year on. In 2009, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had spent $593M on advertising. In 10 years, that has slowly risen to $11 billion. Not once in the past decade has the ad expenditure gone down.
In their disclosure of the marketing expenses, Amazon is known to have shelled out $18.9 billion. $11 billion has been spent alone on advertising and promotions, while $7.9 billion covers other costs borne by the company.
