As per the Smart City, 2020 Awards declared by the Central Government on Friday, Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Surat (Gujarat) won the Smart City Award jointly for their overall development in the year. The awards were given based on multiple themes of Social Aspects, Governance, Culture, Urban Environment, Sanitation, Economy, Built Environment, Water, Urban Mobility and the like.
As per the report, “Surat is the best performing city owing to their efforts of deploying a dedicated team of data experts and incorporating various technological advancements, such as the establishment of SuratiLab, an advanced innovation lab for uncovering modern solutions for improved service delivery”
Of the total 100 cities in the Smart City list, 40 of them have been certified as having put in place systems to use data-based evidence for governance delivery. This is in lieu of the second round of the ‘Data Maturity Assessment Framework’ which is undertaken by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The cities of Surat, Indore, Ahmedabad, Pune, Vijayawada, Rajkot, Visakhapatnam, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Vadodara have been awarded a 4-star rating under the Climate-Smart Cities Assessment Framework. Under the categories of Union Territories, Chandigarh won the prize. The most “Innovative Idea Award” was won by the city of Indore and the ‘Smart Cities Leadership Award’ was won by Ahmedabad, followed by Varanasi and Ranchi in the second and third position respectively.
