Five basic things you should know about term plan

  • First and foremost, acquaint yourself with the policy language. Key terms such as “sum assured” and “policy term” are foundational to understanding how term plans work. The “sum assured” represents the amount your beneficiaries receive in the unfortunate event of your demise, covering financial obligations like mortgages, education expenses, and daily living costs. The “policy term” indicates the duration of your coverage, aligning with the timeframe you wish to ensure your family’s protection.
  • Next, consider the type of coverage that suits your needs. Term plan offer pure protection, creating a financial safety net for a specific period. In contrast, whole-life plans blend protection with an investment component, accumulating cash value over time. Keep in mind that whole-life plans generally come with higher premiums.
  • Understanding premium structures is pivotal for effective budgeting. Opting for level premiums means your payments remain consistent throughout the policy term, providing predictability. On the other hand, increasing premiums gradually rise with age, reflecting the growing risks associated with ageing. Limited pay options allow you to pay higher premiums for a shorter duration, ensuring coverage for an extended period.
  • Selecting the beneficiaries of your term plan is a crucial decision. Choose primary recipients and have backup ones in case the primary ones are unable to receive the funds. If your beneficiaries include children, designate a trustworthy individual to manage the money until they reach adulthood. Regularly review and update this information as your family situation evolves.
  • Understanding the significance of term plans in safeguarding your family’s finances is paramount. These plans offer peace of mind, assuring you that your family will be financially secure even if you are not there.
