Google Unveils Circle To Search

The realm of the internet thrives on exploration, and Google Search has continually led the way with its unparalleled speed, diverse information offerings, and precision in relevance. Adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a driving force, Google is now introducing features that not only enhance the accessibility of search functions but also deliver a wealth of information at users’ fingertips.

Circle to Search: A Revolutionary Search Experience

This innovative feature revolutionizes how users interact with the internet on their Android devices. Circle to Search allows seamless searching without switching applications. Through simple gestures such as circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping, users can explore any object on their Android phone screen, fetching instant information within the app itself.

How It Works:

  • Long-press the home button or navigation bar to activate Circle to Search.
  • Use intuitive gestures to select items of interest, like identifying products in influencer videos.
  • Receive information and find similar options from web retailers effortlessly.
  • Swipe back to the starting point, maintaining context seamlessly.

According to Google, the AI-powered upgrades enable multi-search, allowing users to search with text and images simultaneously. This feature is set to debut on select premium Android devices, including the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Series.

Alistair Pott, Director of Product Management for the Search App on Android, expresses excitement about Circle to Search, emphasizing its significance in helping users express their needs more naturally.

AI-powered Overviews for Multi-search in Lens: Visual Search Redefined

Google introduces AI-powered overviews for multi-search in Lens, enhancing visual search capabilities. Users can point their camera at objects or upload pictures to receive instant insights powered by generative AI. This feature, initially launching in the US, simplifies asking nuanced questions about visual content.

Global Access

Users outside the US, enrolled in SGE, can preview this experience in the Google App. Access AI-powered overviews on multi-search results within Circle to Search.

Google emphasizes its commitment to making AI helpful for everyone. As experimentation continues, applications of generative AI that prove most helpful will be introduced into Search more broadly.

Ensuring Safety and Privacy in Search

Google prioritizes user data security and privacy in these innovative search functionalities. The key highlights include:

  • All activities related to Circle to Search remain on the device until explicitly selected, ensuring privacy.
  • Quick and easy features enable users to remove the last 15 minutes of search history for enhanced privacy and control.

Alistair Pott emphasizes that the entire process of invoking Circle to Search and scanning user activity happens on the device, only triggering a Google search when the user explicitly selects an item.

The Future of Search: Google’s Ongoing Endeavor

While these updates mark a significant leap towards a more natural and intuitive search experience, Google assures users that this is just the beginning. The search giant encourages users to enroll in its Search, available in seven languages across 120 countries, and opt into the SGE experiment to explore the latest capabilities firsthand. The journey of refining and enhancing the search experience continues.
