Online Gaming Industry In India
The online gaming industry in India is growing by leaps and bounds. As per a KPMG report, the predictions are for adding 190 Mn gamers and also reach $1bn opportunity by 2021. As per a report by Flurry Analytics, India is amongst the top 5 countries in the world for online and mobile gaming. Not just gamers, but gaming startups in India have increased from just about 20 to now over 250 in five years.
The Reason
One of the prime reasons for this growth is the smartphone hook. Smartphones have really glued people to the screen and gaming forms one of the major reasons for people being hooked to their phones. Mobile gaming has seen multifold of growth especially in the past 2 years and is continuing to grow each day.
The Big Players
The investments are also raking in enough and big for gaming startups. Nazara Technologies had formed an alliance with Amazon to provide localized Indian gaming experience on Amazon Fire TV making the tech giant make a debut in the gaming world.
Just recently Nazara also picked up a 10% stake in InstaSportz, a Bengaluru based VR gaming company and is planning to take it to 26% by end of this year. With this investment, Nazara is now in competition with Sachin Tendulkar backed VR gaming and entertainment company Smaaash.
Additionally, Nazara is also expected to raise $142 Mn (INR 1000 Cr) from its IPO which will reportedly increase its valuation to around $500 Mn
Earlier this year Paytm had partnered with Hong Kong-based gaming and entertainment giant AGTech Holdings to launch Gamepind, a mobile gaming platform with social and casual games.
Led by Tencent, Mumbai based fantasy gaming company Dream 11 raised $100 Mn in series D funding round.
Other Players
Loco, Flixy Games, Passion Gaming, PlaySimple, GameXS, Pi Interactive, 99Games, Apar Games, RedMonsterGames and CreatioSoft are some of the other major players in the gaming industry today.
