The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has summoned Netflix officials for allegedly making “sexually explicit content” accessible to minors on the OTT platform.
As per reports, the apex child rights body, in a letter to Netflix officials, said that “unrestricted accessibility of explicit content” to minors on the platform, citing it as a violation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The NCPCR mentioned that they had written Netflix earlier in June regarding the same issue but had not received a response.
As per reports, the letter stated, “Now, therefore, the commission in pursuance of the functions and powers (under) order Section 14 of CPCR Act 2005 requires you to appear in person physically before the commission along with the details of the action taken in this matter at 1500 hours on July 29, 2024.”
The NCPCR acted after receiving a complaint from Uday Mahurkar of the Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation (SCSBF). The complaint stated that Netflix unlawfully showing adult content on its platform, which kids can watch without any blocks.
As of now it isn’t clear which particular shows or movies is the NCPCR referring to. This ambiguity arises because the platform provides a vast selection of content from across the globe, all of which is available to its subscribers worldwide.
