8 Signs That Tell You Are In A Toxic Workplace

| Published on October 11, 2021

Since the pandemic, many companies have shifted their workplace towards work from home culture. While many may argue about the pros, there are certain cons to it. For one, employees are getting easily burned out by working overtime more frequently.

However, even before the pandemic, when people used to physically go to their workplace, there were instances when they were faced with challenges that made the work environment unhealthy.

Considering both scenarios, here are some of the ways where you can judge if your workplace has become toxic. And if they match, it is time to switch jobs.

1. Bad Leadership

One of the major red flags of a toxic workplace is when the leadership lacks in itself. A manager or a boss who does not work in alignment with his/her subordinates ends up making the workplace stressful.

There are managers who tend to micromanage by undermining your efforts or picking faults without giving productive feedback. In fact, bosses who play the blame game are the major discouragement for employees.

This behavior ends up in the employees being unproductive or not performing up to their capabilities.

2. Low Employee Retention

When an employee is not motivated to spend more than a couple of days or months in a company, it means that they are not satisfied with the work environment.

The reasons could be anything and even if a company is performing well it can still have unhappy employees. It all boils down to how managers are handling employee issues and if they are given enough space to express themselves.

3. Lack Of Communication

Any workplace is all about teamwork. From managers to subordinates to inter-department operations, communication plays a vital role. At times, people tend to work on their personal level without effectively communicating which tends to be destructive and time-consuming.

4. Gossip Culture At Workplace

A gossip culture is something that exists in almost every company. The fact that it is a common practice, does not make it right. When people feel threatened by the way their colleagues are talking behind their back, it creates a sense of dissatisfaction to turn up to work anymore.

5. Inequality In Code Of Conduct

When managers implement rules and regulations selectively, it makes it unfair for the entire department. This happens when bosses have favorites and their wrongdoings are ignored while others are highlighted. A healthy workplace should not be biased towards anyone and rules and policies should be the same for each and every employee.

6. Lack Of Worklife Balance

Employees are entitled to have a healthy work-life balance. A healthy workplace would not let you carry the work stress at home. If it is happening, then it is a toxic workplace. It does not mean that work is not supposed to be stressful but one should not take work home with them.

7. Employee Burnout

It has been discovered by many studies that employees who get enough personal time are the ones who end up being more productive. In the day and age of work from home culture, it was seen that many companies expected their employees to put in extra hours. This lead to substantial damage to the mental well-being of many employees.

Many leading industrialists came forward and urged companies to not over-work their employees and give them the time off they deserve by law.

8. Bosses Being Unapproachable

Every workplace has an order of hierarchy that everyone needs to follow. But if it becomes impossible for an employee to go up to his/her manager and share their issues with it becomes impossible for employees to survive. It is the duty of every manager to keep interacting with his/her employees and help them out if they get stuck. A manager is not just meant to give out work but also to make sure that the employees are doing well.
