India‘s growing unemployment rate has been a grave concern for every political agenda. People are struggling to find jobs & employment as per their efficiency.

When the city corporation had called for applications for the posts of 549 grade-1 sanitary posts, 7,000 applicants appeared. The interview held and the certificate verification process was three days long.

Once the verification and application scrutinization was done, the officials found out that 70 percent of the candidates have completed the 10th board, which is the minimum qualification required for the post, and most of them were engineers, postgraduates, graduates, and diploma-holders.

With further investigation, it was found that many applicants were already employed with private firms but since the permanent government job fetched Rs 15700 monthly salary, they were more attracted to this job.

Most of the applicants were working jobs that were below their caliber. Since they had to support their families and due to personal needs they were already working at jobs at as low as Rs 5000 – Rs 6000 monthly pay.

Since the sanitary worker’s job fetches a salary of Rs 15000 along with the working hours of three hours in the morning and three hours in the evening, the applicants saw this as an opportunity to have a permanent job and still have time to do other petty jobs for extra pay.

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation now has 2,000 permanent and 500 contract sanitary workers working under its rolls.
