Snapchat, in collaboration with YouGov, conducted research on Indian nickname culture, shedding light on the country’s fascination with nicknames. The study reveals popular nicknames such as Sonu, Babu, Macha, Shona, and Pinky, while highlighting the unique subculture surrounding nicknaming.

New AR Lenses Inspired by Nicknames

The research inspired Snapchat to launch two new Augmented Reality (AR) lenses focused on nicknames. The lenses, titled “India’s Top Nicknames” and “My Nickname,” allow users to embrace and celebrate their nicknames in a fun and interactive way.

Nicknames and Indian Identity

Nicknames play a significant role in shaping individual identities in India. They go beyond labels and are deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric. Popular nicknames across India include Sonu, Babu, Chotu, Annu, and Chintu. However, regional variations showcase nicknames such as Golu and Sunny in the North, Ammu and Macha in the South, Shona and Mishti in the East, and Pinky and Dada in the West.

Emotional Connections and Validation

Indian users revealed that nicknames are used to build deeper connections and validate relationships. Around 67% of respondents stated that they use nicknames to feel closer to someone. This emotional connection highlights the cultural significance of nicknaming in India.

The Power of Early Connections

The survey highlights the lasting impact of nicknames received during childhood or school years. Nicknames create a distinct sense of belonging, with 61% of respondents mentioning that they go by a different name at home.

The Arrival of New AR Lenses

Snapchat users in India can access the new lenses by searching for “IN’s Top Nicknames” and “My Nickname IN” in the lens carousel. By pointing their phones at their faces, they can engage in the fun of exploring and sharing their nicknames with close friends and followers.

About the Survey and Research Methodology

The survey, commissioned by YouGov, interviewed 2500 respondents aged 16 to 30 across ten Indian cities. The questionnaire covered various aspects of Indian nicknaming culture, including popular nicknames, the number of nicknames individuals have had, the timing of nickname assignment, attitudes towards nicknames, and nickname usage on social media.
